Moorefield’s Lane Ours Signs to Play Baseball at Waynesburg University

An old proverb says that “patience is a virtue”.

Moorefield senior graduate Lane Ours developed the upmost patience and persevered past hurdles with tremendous dedication to communicate and showcase his talent to collegiate coaches as his final campaign was negated by the pandemic.

This commitment to strengthening his baseball skills and knowledge enabled Ours to make lemonade out of the lemons in seeking his goal joining the baseball program at Waynesburg University.

“I am very excited to be blessed with this opportunity, it has always been a dream in my life to play collegiate baseball and this is something I will never forget,” Lane Ours remarked.

“I wanted to thank Coach [Scott] Stutler for setting this up, he told me about the school and he knew I still had several options and I told him what not and this ‘extra option’ happened to be my go-to. What kept me motivated the most is definitely my work ethic and always having a positive attitude towards everything you do in life and to not let anything get you down. I told myself I was going to play at the next level and I’ve been going to the cages nearly everyday after work and hitting and throwing some long toss with my brother and a couple other local college guys.”[private]

Waynesburg University Baseball coach Mike Humiston was very impressed with the talent and character displayed by Ours.

“We are ecstatic about Lane Ours joining our program this fall. He brings the talent that every coach looks for in a player. Lane’s experiences at Moorefield, will allow him to be an intricate part of our program,” Waynesburg University Baseball skipper Mike Humiston commented.

“We look forward to having him start the next chapter of his academic and athletic life as a Yellow Jacket. While Lane exhibits very good catching skills, his athleticism allows us to believe he could also play in the outfield. Lane is a young man with character and that’s a trait that goes a long way in our program. We can’t wait to see how he will help complement our program.”

Waynesburg University competes in the NCAA Division III within the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and Coach Humiston will be entering his 16th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets.

Waynesburg University was founded in 1849 by the Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Pennsylvania with the motto of “Fiat Lux” and maintains a commitment to service as a way of witnessing to the love of God in the world.

Students at the institution work over 50,000 hours in community service oriented projects throughout the academic year.

One of the academic buildings has a plaque featuring the following Bible verse Psalm 90:1 “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.”

There are over 1,700 students enrolled at Waynesburg University with an average class size of 16 students and a student to faculty ratio of 13:1.

Ours was the catcher for the two-time defending state champion Moorefield Yellow Jackets and has become more versatile spending countless hours becoming an outfielder to be able to have more ways to contribute at the collegiate level.

Honing his skills on the diamond has filled the summer days with time spent in the Rockingham County Baseball League withthe Broadway Bruins and on the 18U Blue Ridge Generals Baseball travel team.

One cool thing for Ours is that the mascot will remain the same from high school to college remaining a Yellow Jacket.

Being honest and respectful were things that impressed Ours concerning the coaches’ perspective on recruitment.

“The coaches definitely are what pushed me to go that way, they talked to me as if they knew me my entire life and didn’t try to pressure me into coming to Waynesburg. They kept it real with me and that’s what I liked the most, but also Waynesburg is an accredited school and they are ranked pretty high in their business administration programs and they offer unique internships through professional teams such as the Pittsburgh Pirates,” Ours noted.

Ours intends to double major in Business Administration: Sports Management and Marketing.
