Moorefield Sweeps Viking Remnants Out of the Hive

Moorefield Volleyball swept the Vikings remnants out of the Hive after defeating Class AA Petersburg in straight sets to claim the second consecutive win to commence the year this past Tuesday: 25-12, 25-16 and 25-20.

“There was a lot of progression from Keyser to today and we like that. To play it in three. You saw it in game two, we lacked a few things. We get up, then let them come back and get up again as that cycle continued. There was a lack of consistency and every player on the bench took part in it. It definitely was a team effort for everybody and you find a positive for each one of them to work on now. Every game and every practice we are finding something we can better ourselves on for the season,” Moorefield coach Morgan See remarked.

An attack by Petersburg’s Kimberly Minnich was redirected into the net by the Yellow Jackets for the first point of the match.

Moorefield’s Remington Hinkle made block and it was saved by Petersburg’s Chassitty Stump.[private]

An attack by Moorefield’s Lauren Arbaugh was met with a dig by Stump, then Hinkle slammed down a spike for the tie.

Gracie O’Neill served up an ace for the Yellow Jackets and an attack by Hinkle ricocheted off the Vikings out of bounds for a 3-1 edge.

Both sides committed errors before Moorefield’s Hailey Biser delivered an ace for a 5-2 lead.

The Vikings responded with a kill by Stump, then an attack by Hinkle was returned out of play.

Hinkle jumped up to the service line garnering three straight aces before the next serve was swallowed by the net for a 9-4 edge.

After a couple errors in the net by the Yellow Jackets, an attack by Moorefield’s Sterling Kump was retuned into the web.

Kaleigh Hunt made a spike and notched an ace to build an 11-6 lead as the Yellow Jackets looked just as crisp compared to last season.

Arbaugh made a set pass for Kump to smash a spike as the scoring looked solid, but the next volley went out of play for the Yellow Jackets.

Moorefield’s Alyson Simmons made a dig and the pass was redistributed by Arbaugh to Hinkle for an attack.

Hinkle and Hunt executed kills prior to O’Neill delivering three aces to give Moorefield a 23-8 advantage

Petersburg created points off an attack by Minnich and a serve by Aaliyah Goldizen.

Biser made a brilliant save along the bench for the Yellow Jackets, but the ball was returned by Petersburg’s Sadie Dayton for a point.

Simmons finished the first set with a spike to create the 25-12 Moorefield win.

The Yellow Jackets started the second set with an ace delivered by O’Neill, but it was countered with an attack by Petersburg’s Hannah Lafferre that was returned into the net.

Hinkle notched a point on a kill, then Simmons launched an attack and it was returned by Minnich with a block attempt by Arbaugh that was over zealous as her hand hit the net, 2-2.

The Vikings got a point off a serve by Golden, then Simmons made a dig save which transformed into a point landing on the floor as Petersburg failed to communicate.

After a volley out of bounds by the Yellow Jackets, Petersburg’s Minnich launched a couple aces for a 6-3 lead.

Moorefield countered a kill by Amber Williams, then a serve by Hinkle was swallowed by the net.

Several attacks by O’Neill and service points by Hunt helped Moorefield rally for a 10-9 lead.

Petersburg fought back with kills by Lafferre and Stump plus a couple of attempted blocks by Simmons landed into the net, 12-11.

Hinkle made dig save on an attack by Petersburg’s Brooklynn Rohrbaugh on the back row and Simmons redirected it over her head for a point.

O’Neill delivered three aces and Hinkle slammed down a kill as the Yellow Jackets took a 17-13 lead.

The Vikings cut the deficit down to 17-16 on kills by Minnich and Rohrbaugh.

Moorefield’s Sterling Kump served up an ace and Hunt notched a point off an attack returned into the net, 21-16.

Kump closed the door on the second set with two consecutive aces for the 25-16 victory.

Petersburg held an early 6-3 lead in the third set with the help of some errors and kills by Minnich and Lafferre.

After a service error, the momentum shifted as Moorefield’s O’Neill and Kump garnered kills to commandeer a 7-6 edge.

An attack by Kump after a serve by Hunt was met with a block and carrying violation by the Vikings.

Simmons made a dig and the set by Arbaugh to O’Neill resulted in a spike and Hinkle added another kill.

Simmons and Hunt kept the floor clear with digs, while blocking was being made by Kump and Arbaugh notched a big save.

Petersburg steady climbed back with the help of some errors and an ace by Lafferre to regain the lead 13-11.

Moorefield countered with attacks by Hinkle and an ace from Kump plus a couple of errant Vikings volleys plus another point off a push by O’Neill for a 17-14 switch in the advantage.

Biser created several service points with assistance from Amber Williams and Kump to take a 22-17 lead.

Moorefield’s Tori Humphries made a crisp pass to Kump for a spike then Hunt delivered an ace for a 24-20 score.

The Yellow Jackets closed out the match sweep over Petersburg on an attack by O’Neill which was redirected into the net.

The prelude junior varsity match was commandeered by the Yellow Jackets by the scores of 25-6 and 25-15.

Moorefield’s Marissa Ward, Amber Williams, Sara Carlson, Aislynn Richardson and McKenna Crites accounted for multiple aces apiece in the junior varsity victory.

The Yellow Jackets visited rival East Hardy yesterday and hosts Pendleton County tomorrow.

Moorefield has a rematch against Petersburg on the road on September 29.[/private]
